Op vrijdag 12 september bracht Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen de wereldcreatie van de Gentse Symfonie van Jef Neve op de prelude van OdeGand. Dit nieuwe werk gaat niet alleen over het rijke verleden, maar ook over het Gent van nu in al zijn facetten.
Na de commotie van de voorbije dagen wilden we nog meer dan anders uitsluitend de muziek centraal plaatsen. De beslissing van het orkest om op te treden was gebaseerd op hun overtuiging dat muziek de kracht in zich draagt om te helen, inspireren, en verbinding te creëren. Vlak voor het concert bleek echter dat twee externe solisten zich met symbolen wensten te uiten die niet aansluiten bij deze gedachte.
De directies van Gent Festival en Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, componist Jef Neve en dirigent Martijn Dendievel gingen samen in overleg met de solisten. Het aanvankelijk door één van de solisten aanvaarde compromis bleek uiteindelijk toch niet voldoende, waarna de solisten besloten hun deelname in te trekken. Met respect voor hun beslissing heeft het concert zonder hun medewerking plaatsgevonden.
Gent Festival en Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen hebben in gezamenlijkheid gehandeld.
In geen geval is hier door één iemand, met name dirigent Martijn Dendievel, op aangestuurd. We betreuren dat de uitvoering niet met de beoogde cast is kunnen doorgaan.

On Friday, September 12, Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen (Flanders Symphony Orchestra) presented the world premiere of Jef Neve's Ghent Symphony as part of the Festival van Vlaanderen Gent (Ghent Festival). This new work celebrates not only the city's rich past, but also contemporary Ghent in all its complexity.
Following recent controversies, our focus was to ensure the music remained the sole centerpiece. The orchestra’s decision to perform was based on their belief that music has the power to heal and inspire; and to celebrate humanism. However, moments before the concert, two external soloists insisted on displaying symbols that went against this principle.
The managements of Ghent Festival and Flanders Symphony Orchestra, composer Jef Neve, and conductor Martijn Dendievel attempted to resolve the issue with the soloists. While a compromise was initially accepted by one of the soloists, it was later rejected by both. The soloists then chose to withdraw from the performance. Respecting their decision, the concert took place without them.
Ghent Festival and Flanders Symphony Orchestra acted together. In no way was it driven by a single individual, especially not conductor Martijn Dendievel. It’s unfortunate that this situation prevented the concert from taking place featuring the originally intended cast.
