Composer and pianist Jef Neve was born in Turnhout, but has close ties to the city of Ghent. His First Symphony is an artistic ode to this city and its inhabitants. According to Neve, the symphony is a musical exploration of Ghent, in which its historical heritage and contemporary technological developments interact. The four-movement composition sketches an aural portrait of a city moving between past and future, with roots in the Middle Ages and a focus on innovation. In the tradition of composers such as Mozart, Haydn and their city symphonies, Neve creates his own “Ghent” symphony with this composition. The work will have its world premiere on the eve of OdeGand at the Wintercircus and will be performed again the following day.
