Finishing his first symphony took Brahms more than fifteen years. Symphony No. 1 is a grand synthesis of Beethoven's legacy and Brahms' own ingenuity – all muscular rhythms, flowing lyricism and heartfelt drama. Kristiina Poska counterbalances Brahms with the wandering sound of her compatriot Eduard Tubin. Soloist Josef Špaček brings out even the finest nuances of Tubin's Violin Concerto. Finally, Mortelmans' Elegy No. 1 offers us a haunting Flemish take on Brahmsian romanticism.
