Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Symphony no. 4
Gustav Mahler (1860- 1911)
Symphony no. 4
For Kristiina Poska, Beethoven's Fourth Symphony is the chronicle of a long-announced turning point: the conclusion of the Beethoven cycle and her farewell as chief-conductor. For Beethoven and Mahler, too, their fourth symphonies were turning points. Fate was already lurking around the corner, but as they wrote them, life was on their side. Mahler's Das himmlische Leben, sung by soprano Chen Reiss, evokes a serene image of the afterlife.
