In times of change, traditions offer guidance, recognition and collective identity, yet they can also lead to rigidity and exclusion. Not so with the masters in this programme: they respect them and enter into dialogue with them. At the opening of the Beethoven year, the bridge between Classicism and Romanticism is essential. His Piano Concerto No. 4 innovates with an intimate opening for solo piano. Inspired by the Rhine, Schumann embraces the classical symphonic model and renews it from within: monumental, personal, warm.
