Admiration from afar
The wealthy businesswoman Nadezhda von Meck had boundless admiration for Tchaikovsky. It is thanks to her patronage that we still know Tchaikovsky today. They exchanged hundreds of letters but never met. Beethoven was also initially admired from afar in our part of the world. But in 1849, the Ghent composer Charles-Louis Hanssens ensured that Beethoven's Ninth finally premiered in Belgium. Film composer Max Richter also entered into dialogue with Beethoven with great admiration in his Opus 2020.
