As a young artist, you need talent to stand out from the crowd, but playing opportunities and a professional environment with room for experimentation are at least as important. Through various trajectories, we give budding composers, conductors, musicians and soloists a taste of orchestral life. Together with the young generation, we are building the future!
SOV Young, youth orchestra
SOV Young is a symphonic youth orchestra by and for young people aged between 14 and 20, based in Ghent. Each year they are coached during two projects by musicians from Flanders Symphony Orchestra, with as grand finale, a public concert. The programme covers an iron repertoire with a contemporary twist. For this project, Flanders Symphony Orchestra works together with the Ghent Royal Conservatory. The artistic direction is led by Martijn Dendievel, assistant conductor of Flanders Symphony Orchestra.
FSO Conducting Masterclass
An international masterclass for young conductors. During three days, some young talents are given the opportunity to work together with our orchestra, under the direction of chief conductor Kristiina Poska. Master and apprentice, side by side! Together they study some absolute repertoire pieces and the magical art of conducting.
Master classes Conservatorium Ghent
Students of the Ghent Royal Conservatory occupy the stage of Muziekcentrum De Bijloke Ghent, and work side by side with the leaders of Flanders Symphony Orchestra. By rehearsing repertoire works, the students gain an insight into the functioning of an orchestra: the communication between the conductor and the members of the orchestra/concertmaster, the contact between the master and its groups, and the relationship between the various players groups. The master class is concluded with a public presentation.
FSO Composers' Academy
Every year, three students of Belgian conservatories are offered the opportunity to work together with the orchestra for several months. During workshops, work sessions and orchestral rehearsals, their compositions are moulded and carefully considered. The final result is presented to the audience as the Flanders Symphony Orchestra includes the compositions in its concert programme.
