Talent development

As a young artist, you need talent to stand out from the crowd, but playing opportunities and a professional environment with room for experimentation are at least as important. Through various trajectories, we give budding composers, conductors, musicians and soloists a taste of orchestral life. Together with the young generation, we are building the future!

Education & outreach

Music knows no boundaries and Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen takes that quite literally. With our education and outreach projects, we open our doors and go out ourselves. During our open rehearsals, we introduce pupils to the world of classical music and the symphony orchestra. We also visit schools, the children's hospital and the social neighbourhood restaurant. Our goal? Breaking down barriers, stimulating curiosity and making classical music accessible to everyone.

SOV Young Soloist

For several seasons now, young people between 14 and 20 have found their way to SOV Young, the symphonic youth orchestra of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen. New since season 2023-24: as part of SOV Young Soloist, a young soloist will accompany them on stage. For season 2024-25, we went in search of a violinist.

SOV Young

SOV Young is a symphonic youth orchestra by and for young people aged between 14 and 20, based in Ghent. Each year they are coached during two projects by musicians from Flanders Symphony Orchestra, with as grand finale, a public concert. The programme covers an iron repertoire with a contemporary twist. The artistic director is Martijn Dendievel.

Masterclasses Conservatory Gent

SOV Masterclasses give students of the Royal Conservatory of Ghent the opportunity to attend a masterclass twice per academic year. They work side by side with our conductors. Using repertoire pieces, the students gain insight into the workings of an orchestra: the communication between conductor and orchestra members/concertmaster, the contact between conductors and their group, and the relationship between the different groups. At the end, there will be an public presentation.

SOV Composers' Academy

Every year, the SOV Composers' Academy offers the chance to two to three composers studying at Belgian conservatories to complete a course of several months with the orchestra. During workshops, working sessions and orchestra rehearsals, their compositions are moulded and carefully considered. The final result will be presented to the public during a concert series by Flanders Symphony Orchestra.

Project in collaboration with Muziekcentrum De Bijloke and DE SINGEL.
